2019 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe price
Stunningly quick – and stunningly good looking – four-door coupes do not come cheap so news that the BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe will cost around £80,000 won’t be a surprise to you. That puts the huge Beemer in line to compete with cars such as the Porsche Panamera and high-end versions of the Mercedes CLS. The BMW is likely to go on sale in the middle of 2019.
2019 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe styling
This is the first time we have seen the front of the 8 Series completely undisguised and it’s good to see the spirit of the show-stopping BMW M8 Concept Gran Coupe – that we first saw at the Geneva motor show – lives on in this production car. Just like it, the 8 Series you’ll be able to buy gets a huge chrome grille flanked with sleek headlights that have BMW’s latest design of LED light signatures. The angular lower bumper of this particular car points towards it being the extremely quick M850i – which’ll need extra cooling air sent to its engine, intercoolers and brakes. The ‘power dome’ – or bonnet creases if you don’t work at BMW – will, however, likely be a feature of all BMW 8 Series models.
In profile you get a real sense of the scale of the 8 Series, which is more than 5m long. That length means BMW can give the car relatively large rear doors – for great access to the back seat – without upsetting the car’s coupe like aesthetics. A big car means you also need big wheels if they’re not to look lost in the BMW’s huge arches, which means the 8 Series Gran Coupe will have big alloy wheels up to 20-inches in size.
2019 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe Interior
The 2019 BMW 8 series Gran Coupe will be more practical than the coupe model it’s based upon thanks to the better access provided by the car’s rear doors.
Legroom should also be improved to allow the Gran Coupe to comfortably accommodate tall adults, although you can expect that roofline to eat into rear headroom, while the small windows will make the back feel like a claustrophobic place to sit. Expect to get a boot that’ll be big enough for a few suitcases.
Up front, very little if anything will change from the two-door model, so you’ll likely get a low-set, sporty driving position, a large transmission tunnel that runs between the two front seats and a huge infotainment screen that’ll be operated using the car’s iDrive controller.
2019 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe performance
The 2019 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe will be available with a choice of petrol and diesel engines. All models get an eight-speed automatic gearbox, while four-wheel drive and four-wheel steering will also be available.
The M850i model will offer the most performance. Its twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 petrol produces 530hp, which should be enough to get the big coupe from 0-62mph in under four seconds. It delivers full torque (750nm) from just 1,800rpm – so the BMW will have loads of low down thrust. That said, fuel economy of 28.3mpg means it will not be cheap to run.
If you’d rather prioritise fuel economy, the 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged 640d diesel will return more like 50mpg, but should still be capable of getting the car from 0-62mph in less than five seconds.
