The new Peugeot 308 hatchback and 308 SW estate have been spotted undergoing testing before these new family cars go on sale in 2022. Read on for full details.

  • New Puegeot 308 and spotted
  • Silhouette similar to current car
  • Available as hatchback and SW estate
  • Petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid engines
  • Fully electric version is possible
  • Expected to cost from £23,000
  • On sale in 2022

The new Peugeot 308 has been spied out and about in testing, in both its hatchback and more spacious estate guises. Details on the upcoming family car are still a closely guarded secret, but expect the new 308 to sport stylish looks, an upgraded interior and lots of efficient engine option when it arrives in 2022 to make it an alternative to the Ford Focus and Volkswagen Golf.

Heavy camouflage disguises most of the new 308’s details.

2022 Peugeot 308 design

These new Peugeot 308 prototypes are covered in camouflage vinyl to disguise the new car’s design. The new car will look very similar to other new Peugeots, such as the 508 and 208, thansk to a slimmer pair of headlights that appear to link seamlessly into the grille. There’s also a pair of fang-like daytime running lights obvious through the camouflage.

The new 308 will sport a similar silhouette to the outgoing car.

The new Peugeot 308 looks a little bit sleeker than the car it replaces, too, thanks to the sloping roofline, the sporty rear spoiler and the strong shoulder line over the rear wheel arches. Details at the back are tricky to make out, though the rear lights look like they’re similar to the ones you’ll find on the smaller Peugeot 208 supermini.

2022 Peugeot 308 SW Estate spotted

Just like its predecessor, the next Peugeot 308 will be available as a more spacious 308 SW estate. As the test car in the spy shots show, the 308 SW will retain many of the regular hatchback’s sleek styling cues, such as the tapering roofline and the vertical daytime running lights.

Interior dimensions won’t be confirmed until closer to launch, though you can expect the new Peugeot 308 SW to have even more boot space than the current car – which, thanks to its 660 litres of cargo capacity, is already one of the most spacious estates in this class. Taller passengers may also appreciate you going for the SW over the regular Peugeot 308, because the slightly higher roofline means there should be a bit more back-seat headroom on offer.

2022 Peugeot 308 interior and infotainment

The Peugeot badge on the steering wheel appears all new.

Just like the exterior, the new Peugeot 308’s interior will also rock a noticeably different look on the inside. While the small steering wheel setup has been retained, it looks like the analogue instruments on the current car have been replaced entirely with a fully digital display. The thick black covers make it impossible to know for sure, but it’s likely the centre console will be dominated by a big touchscreen display.

It’ll be a while yet before you get to find out just how spacious the new Peugeot 308 is, though it will almost certainly offer a bit more head and leg room all round than the car it replaces. Likewise, expect a modest increase in the current Peugeot 308’s already impressive boot capacity of 470 litres.

2022 Peugeot 308 engines

Expect a range of petrol, diesel and hybrid engine options.

A lot of the Peugeot 308’s engine details are being kept under wraps for now. However, it’ likely many of the current car’s 1.2-litre petrol and 1.5-litre diesel engines will be carried over to the new 308 – albeit with extra tweaks and potentially new mild-hybrid tech to help improve fuel economy.

Peugeot has at least confirmed there will be a version of the new 308 with a plug socket. While this means a fully-electric Peugeot e-308 to rival the Volkswagen ID.3 is possible, it’s much more likely the car will instead be offered with a petrol-electric plug-in hybrid powertrain. More specifically, a petrol-electric setup with around 225hp and roughly 30 miles of electric-only range is anticipated.

Gearbox options should pretty similar to the current 308’s; meaning you’ll be able to choose from either a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic. All Peugeot 308s will likely be front-wheel drive, too.

2022 Peugeot 308 driving

A high-performance hybrid 308 may go on sale after the standard car.

The upcoming Peugeot 308 will be built on an updated version of the basic building blocks used in the outgoing 308. This same mechanical base also underpins more than a dozen Peugeot, Citroen and Vauxhall models.

The new car will likely cost from around £23,000.

2022 Peugeot 308 price and release date

It won’t be too long before the Peugeot 308 goes on sale – the French family hatch is expected to land in showrooms in 2022. Prices will be confirmed closer to launch, though the new 308 should be a bit dearer than the car it replaces – expect the hatchback to start from around £23,000, with estate models likely having a base price closer to £25,000.
