If you’re a fan of fast BMW saloons, then you’re in for a treat with this drag race. As well as the ultra-rapid M550i version of the latest BMW 5 Series saloon, we’ve roped in not one, but two versions of the latest BMW M5.
Normally, a car as punchy as the BMW M550i would be a strong favourite in a ¼ mile drag race. After all, its 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 churns out 530hp and 750Nm of torque, and BMW claims this high-spec 5 Series can sprint to 60mph from a standing start in less than 3.8 seconds.
Those stats pale in comparison to the BMW M5 Competition we have here, though. While it has the same amount of torque, the 625hp M5 has a very healthy power advantage, and its 0-60mph acceleration time is half a second quicker than the M550i’s.
Yet even the M5 Competition can’t hold a candle to the 1,000hp Evolve-tuned monster of a BMW M5 that’s joining them. Long-time carwow drag-race viewers will be familiar with this modified M5’s straight-line speed – and, at the time of writing, it’s one of the fastest cars ever featured in a carwow ¼-mile head-to-head.
So, while the winner of this three-way drag race may be all but decided, the big question is: how will it compare with a bone stock BMW M5 Competition and a BMW M550i? Watch our drag race video above to find out.
