This is the new Volkswagen ID Life. It’s only a concept car for now, but it shows you what VW’s brand-new electric city car could look like when it goes on sale in 2025.

This new model could cost from as little as £17,000, making it much more affordable than the likes of the Renault Zoe, Peugeot e-208 or a Vauxhall Corsa-e.

New VW ID Life design

The new Volkswagen ID Life doesn’t look anything like VW’s other ID products. Where the likes of the ID3 and ID4 are smooth, curvy and futuristic looking, the ID Life injects a dollop of retro boxiness – almost like it was inspired by the original Volkswagen Golf.

That said, the ID Life’s cool headlight graphics, illuminated VW badge and large alloy wheels are all band up-to-date.

It’s unlikely the production car will come without door mirrors like this concept, but it could feature this car’s boxy wheel arches, contrasting black roof and hidden door handles.

New VW ID Life interior

Talk about minimalist – the ID Life’s cabin doesn’t even have a touchscreen. Instead, Volkswagen has fitted it with a shelf designed to hold your smartphone steady so you can use it as your sat-nav and stereo.

Speaking of controls, you can access all the ID Life’s features through touch-sensitive buttons on the steering wheel.

There’s also a built-in 230V power supply that can recharge a range of household gadgets, and it also powers the car’s built-in projector that can beam movies, TV shows or games onto a huge screen that extends out of the dashboard.

You can also fold the front seats away and watch this screen from the back – essentially turning the car into your own personal two-seat cinema.

New VW ID Life batteries and range

VW has fitted the ID Life with a 57kWh battery that’s very similar to the one you get in a mid-range Volkswagen ID3. In the Life, this gives you around 250 miles of range – plenty for commuting, and just 13 miles less than you get in the more expensive ID3.

Volkswagen hasn’t confirmed how quickly you’ll be able to recharge the ID Life, though it’s likely it’ll be compatible with the same public fast chargers that can boost an ID3’s batteries from flat to 80% full in around 30 minutes.

New VW ID Life motor and performance

The VW ID Life comes with a single electric motor producing 234hp. This is enough poke to accelerate this dinky electric car from 0-60mph in 6.9 seconds. That’s slightly quicker than the nippiest Volkswagen ID3, which takes 7.3 seconds to reach 60mph from a standing start.

Unlike the Volkswagen ID3, the ID Life is front-wheel drive.

New VW ID Life price and release date

The VW ID Life won’t go on sale itself, but a production car inspired by this funky concept will appear in showrooms in 2025. Volkswagen has said this new electric car could cost as little as £17,000 in entry-level guise, which would make it one of the cheapest new electric cars on sale.
