Can a modern family saloon be faster than a flagship sports car from 10 years ago? Today we’ll get the answer.
In today’s drag race, Mat’s behind the wheel of a 997 generation Porsche 911 Turbo S. It has a 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged flat-six engine slung out over the rear wheels, putting out 530hp and 700Nm of torque. Power is sent to all four wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox with launch control. As for weight, the 911 comes in at 1,585kg.
Obviously, we’re not putting this up against your run-of-the-mill diesel family saloon. We’ve lined up a BMW M5 CS, the most hardcore M5 ever made. It has a 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine with 635hp and 750Nm of torque. This is sent to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox with launch control. It may have a power advantage, however the CS is heavier than the 911 at 1,825kg.
This should make for an interesting race then. The result? You’ll have to watch the video to find out.
