The Mazda 3 is a smart looking, small family car available in both five-door hatchback and four-door Fastback form. Along with its good looks, it also represents great value for money compared to the similarly-sized Volkswagen Golf and Audi A3.
We’ve put together a guide with all the important dimensions to see if the Mazda 3 is the car for you. Put the Mazda 3 in our car configurator to see how much carwow could help you save.
Mazda 3 and 3 Fastback exterior dimensions
Both the hatchback and Fastback are 1,795mm wide, with the hatchback slightly taller than the Fastback. They’re taller than the Golf though, which measures 1,452mm. The hatchback is 4,465mm long, while the Fastback is marginally longer at 4,585mm.
|Width excluding door mirrors (hatchback/Fastback)||1,795mm/1,795mm|
Mazda 3 and 3 Fastback interior dimensions
Both cars are five-seaters with exactly the same dimensions (inside at least). Despite its sweeping rear end, the Fastback doesn’t lose any of the hatchback’s rear headroom. This’ll be good news if you regularly have passengers in the back.
|Mazda 3 hatchback headroom (front/rear)||981mm/955mm|
|Mazda 3 Fastback headroom (front/rear)||981mm/955mm|
Mazda 3 and 3 Fastback boot space
The hatchback’s luggage capacity is quite impressive if you compare it to similarly sized cars. With the seats up you get 364 litres – slotting between the Vauxhall Astra (351 litres) and the Volkswagen Golf (380 litres). It’s way ahead of the equally priced Ford Focus (316 litres).
The Fastback offers even more space, with 419 litres available, but it’s worth taking into consideration you won’t be able to put the seats down in this model. In two-seat mode, the commodious hatchback’s capacity goes up to 1,263 litres.
|Boot space seats up (hatchback/Fastback)||364 litres/419 litres|
|Boot space seats down (hatchback)||1263 litres|
Mazda 3 and 3 Fastback turning circle and fuel tank capacity
Both cars have the same 2,700mm wheelbase, so can turn in 11 meters. This is slightly more than the Golf, which can make a full turn in 10.9 meters. The 51-litre fuel tank means the Mazda 3 will have a good range regardless of your choice of engine.
|Turning circle||11 metres|
|Fuel tank||51 litres|
Mazda 3 and 3 Fastback weight
The Mazda weighs 1,351kg for the hatchback with the 1.5-litre petrol engine, and goes up to 1,458kg for the Fastback featuring the 2.2-litre diesel engine. This is average for the class, although it’s slightly more than the 1,264kg Focus hatchback.
|Lightest (hatchback 1.5-litre petrol)||1,351kg|
|Heaviest (Fastback 2.2-litre diesel)||1,458kg|
